Alabama Youth Symphony® performs Fall Concert November 8th
 

Birmingham, Alabama
The Music Opportunity Program®  Alabama Youth Symphony® Fall Concert on Sunday, November 8, 2009 at Indian Springs School Concert Hall included selections from Jacques Offenbach Ballet Parisien, Camile Saint-Saens Algerian Suite, Op. 60, Jaroslav P. Holesovsky Bratislava, Georges Bizet L’Arlesienne, Suite No. 1, and Igor Stravinsky Firebird Suite.

Ushers for the concert were members of the Birmingham String Orchestra®.

Members of AYS are advanced student musicians in violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, and percussion.  They currently represent schools from the greater Birmingham area including Alabama School of Fine Arts, Briarwood Christian School, Robert F. Bumpus Middle School, Clay-Chalkville High School, Homewood High School, Hoover High School, Indian Springs School, Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School, John Carroll Catholic High School, Mortimer Jordan High School, Oak Mountain High School, Shades Valley High School, Spain Park High School, and Vestavia Hills High School.  The orchestra is under the direction of Dr. Jon Remley.

The Alabama Youth Symphony® will return to Indian Springs School on January 24, 2010 for a Winter Concert with the renowned Indian Springs School Concert Choir.  Admission to the concert is open to the public and free.

Membership in AYS is by audition.  Interested students should contact the MOP office for additional   information at (205) 231-9504 or visit the MOP website at www.musicop.org. 

The Music Opportunity Program® sponsors instrument instruction in the String Academy and Private Instruction Divisions as well as three youth orchestras – Birmingham String Orchestra® , a beginning string orchestra; Birmingham Prelude Strings®, an intermediate-level string orchestra; and the Alabama Youth Symphony®, a full orchestra for advanced student musicians.

The Music Opportunity Program® is supported by the Music Opportunity Program Foundation, a 501©(3) nonprofit foundation, and the Music Opportunity Program Alliance, partners in music education in the greater Birmingham area.  Dr. Rita Salzberg is the Director.

AYS Member Named in Birmingham's Portico Magazine

Congratulations to Mary Scott Hodgin, a member of the Alabama Youth Symphony's first violin section, on being recognized by Portico Magazine!

Mary Scott is listed as one of '21 People Who Will Change the World' in the 2009 September/October issue. You can find the magazine on stands at Joe Muggs and Book-A-Million around Birmingham.

Remember you can come to any Registration Meeting and sign up for any After-School String class location.

Sept. 9 - Vestavia Hills Parks & Recreation at 7:00 p.m.
